We’re just three girls from various parts of the country who have a shared love of journalism (we met at Northwestern’s Medill School of Journalism) and fashion in common. But if you’d like specifics…
Monica is a girl of many cities—New York, Phoenix, Boston, London and now Chicago—and each of these places have influenced the way she dresses and looks at fashion. But when NYLON Magazine came out in the late 90s, Monica knew that she had found her monthly inspiration that would let her break out of her standard t-shirt and jeans uniform. Ten years and countless fashion experiments later, she comes to the conclusion that if you can work it, then you can make any t-shirt-and-jeans combo look amazing. She now describes her style as boho-contempo (bohemian contemporary!) but her schizophrenic closet shows that she’ll often deviate from that norm.
Favorite designers: Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Elizabeth and James, Burberry Prorsum, Alice + Olivia, James Perse, Herve Leger
Currently coveting: Balenciaga ‘Lariat’ bag, Herve Leger dress, the perfect aviators, a James Perse shirt in every color
Raised in Kansas City, Anthonia’s exposure to fashion consisted of pouring over issues of Vogue and Elle in her bedroom. When she moved to Chicago for college, she didn’t count on getting an education in boutiques and thrifting, but it definitely sweetened the deal. If she had to describe her style, it would be urban sophisticate – classic staples paired with interesting silhouettes and accessories. Her closet is full of black, white, gray and blue items, a color palette she hasn’t been able to tear herself away from since high school. Although she isn’t a native Chicagoan, Anthonia likes to prove her adopted hometown has style to spare against the big league fashion city of New York.
Favorite designers: Vena Cava, Marc Jacobs, Alexander Wang, Rachel Roy, Elizabeth and James, 3.1 Phillip Lim
Currently coveting: A white boyfriend button-down shirt, a leather jacket with floppy collar, Rachel by Rachel Roy sweater vest, a black quilted Chanel chain purse.
Florida-born and raised, but you’d never hear a stray “ya’ll” to know it. Ileana’s love of art and fashion, and art as fashion started at a very young age. Her favorite memory? Staying up late on school nights as a kid and drawing pictures of models wearing dangerously short skirts and high heels. Maybe not much has changed.
She has spent a lot of time traveling and hopes this multicultural edge has some effect on her boudoir. France, Italy, London, Romania, China, and South Korea are checks on her list and she’s always ready for more.
Her closet is a spastic attempt of wanting to try every fashion and not having adequate space to stow. A private joy is finding a long-forgotten skirt or pair of shoes rediscovered in the jumble. Color staples are black and variations on black. If it is chic and neat, coupled with the rare dramatic angle, she’s all about it. She knows never to take advantage of Fall seasons, her favorite, and can usually be seen wearing opaque tights, oxfords and peacoats.
Her look can be described as androgynous-chic, and she has been known to rock the bomber jacket and boots when the mood is right.
Favorite designers: Too many to list, but for now–Marc Jacobs, YSL, Chanel, Michael Kors, Jil Sander, Eli Tahari and Max Mara.
Currently coveting: All of the above and a Marc Jacobs bag.
